Acupuncture for Fertility and Women’s Health

Fertility and women’s health are closely linked to the delicate balance of the hormonal system, nervous system, and circulation. Modern lifestyle factors, prolonged stress, hormonal imbalances, gynecological conditions, or fertility treatments can all place significant strain on the body.
At VietKimHong Clinic, we support the natural functioning of the female body, hormonal balance, and fertility processes through medically oriented, individualized acupuncture treatments.

Who is this treatment for?

This fertility acupuncture program is recommended for women who are preparing for pregnancy or assisted reproductive treatments (IVF / ICSI).

It may be particularly beneficial for women who:

  • are preparing for IVF or embryo transfer in the coming months
  • have experienced previous failed IVF cycles or implantation failure
  • have hormonal imbalance or irregular menstrual cycles
  • have been diagnosed with low ovarian reserve (low AMH)
  • experience high stress levels during fertility treatment
  • wish to support uterine blood flow and implantation environment

For optimal results, fertility acupuncture is usually recommended as a structured preparation program lasting at least 3 months before the IUI/IVF treatment.

In cases where the IVF cycle is already close, supportive acupuncture treatments may still be provided to help regulate the nervous system and support the implantation environment.

How can acupuncture help?

Acupuncture has been scientifically shown to influence the nervous system, hormonal regulation, and circulation. The aim of treatment is not only to relieve symptoms, but to explore underlying causes and support the body’s self-regulating and regenerative processes.

In the field of fertility and women’s health, acupuncture may be particularly helpful in the following situations:

  • cycle disorders, irregular menstruation
  • hormonal imbalance (complementary support for PCOS, PMS, endometriosis)
  • support of ovulation
  • stress-related fertility difficulties
  • support before and during IVF (in vitro fertilization)
  • recurrent implantation failure
  • physical and emotional preparation for pregnancy

Acupuncture and IVF – how does it help?

During fertility treatments, acupuncture can specifically support:

  • pelvic blood circulation
  • the hormonal axis (hypothalamus–pituitary–ovarian axis)
  • reduction of stress and anxiety
  • calming of the nervous system
  • the body’s regenerative capacity

Numerous international studies indicate that acupuncture, as a complementary therapy, may improve the conditions surrounding IVF treatments, particularly in terms of stress reduction and overall physical balance.

Medical approach, individualized treatment

Each treatment is preceded by a detailed consultation and assessment.
The therapeutic plan takes into account:

  • current gynecological and hormonal status
  • previous treatments and IVF protocols
  • physical and nervous system load
  • emotional factors

There are no standardized treatments — every therapy is individual and adaptable.

What may patients experience?

During the course of treatment, patients often report:

  • deeper relaxation
  • improved sleep quality
  • reduced anxiety
  • a more balanced menstrual cycle
  • increased physical and emotional stability

The goal is not a quick “solution,” but long-term balance and safe, supportive care.

When is acupuncture NOT recommended?

Acupuncture is generally considered a safe complementary treatment when performed by a qualified physician. However, in certain situations treatment may need to be postponed or adapted.

Acupuncture may not be recommended in the following situations:

  • during acute infections or fever
  • immediately after certain medical procedures or surgeries
  • when the patient is unable to follow the recommended treatment schedule
  • when the available time before an IVF cycle is too short for a meaningful preparation program

In such cases, treatment may be postponed or adjusted after consultation.

The goal of the consultation is always to determine whether acupuncture is appropriate and beneficial in the given situation.

TREATMENT PROTOCOL

Every treatment begins with a medical consultation. During this first appointment the patient’s medical history, laboratory results and current fertility treatment plan are reviewed in order to assess whether acupuncture may be beneficial in the given situation.

The treatment plan is always individualized according to the patient’s condition and reproductive treatment timeline.

Preparation phase

For optimal support, fertility acupuncture should ideally begin at least 3 months before the planned IVF cycle. In this phase the main method used is implant acupuncture.

Treatments are usually performed every two weeks, and regular treatment intervals are important for achieving the intended physiological effects. The procedure itself typically takes approximately 15–20 minutes.

The goals of this phase include:

  • supporting uterine blood circulation
  • regulating the nervous system
  • supporting hormonal balance
  • preparing the implantation environment

IVF cycle support

During the IVF cycle acupuncture treatments may be scheduled at specific stages, such as:

  • during ovarian stimulation
  • before egg retrieval
  • around the time of embryo transfer

Embryo transfer support

Around the time of embryo transfer, traditional acupuncture treatment is recommended. This treatment is usually performed on the day of embryo transfer or 1–2 days before the transfer, depending on the individual treatment plan. The aim of this treatment is to support relaxation of the nervous system and optimize the physiological conditions for implantation.
