A Collaborative Approach to Integrative Fertility Support
At VietKimHong Clinic, my work is based on a simple principle: integrative care should support, not replace the conventional reproductive medicine.
As a medical doctor with more than ten years of experience in fertility-support acupuncture, I work with women who are preparing for natural conception, IUI, IVF, embryo transfer, or recovery after previous unsuccessful treatment cycles. My aim is to provide careful, evidence-based supportive care that respects the diagnosis and treatment plan of the patient’s fertility specialist.
I do not position acupuncture as an alternative to reproductive medicine. Instead, I consider it one part of a broader, patient-centred approach that may help support general well-being, stress regulation, sleep, and physical preparation during a demanding fertility journey.
When Referral May Be Appropriate
A referral to VietKimHong Clinic may be considered for patients who:
- are preparing for IVF, IUI, or embryo transfer;
- experience high stress, anxiety, sleep disturbance, or emotional exhaustion during fertility treatment;
- wish to prepare their body before a planned fertility treatment cycle;
- have gone through previous unsuccessful cycles and need support;
- are looking for complementary care while remaining under the supervision of their fertility specialist;
What I Do
At VietKimHong Clinic, I provide:
- medical consultation from an integrative perspective;
- individualised acupuncture treatment plan: fertility-focused acupuncture before and during phases of IVF/ IUI/ FET treatment;
- supportive care for stress, sleep, nervous system regulation, and general well-being;
- collaboration with the patient’s physician when needed and when the patient gives consent.
What I Do Not Do
For clarity and patient safety, I do not:
- replace IVF, IUI, hormonal treatment, surgery, or reproductive medical care;
- advise patients to stop or change medication prescribed by their physician;
- promise pregnancy or guarantee treatment outcomes;
- diagnose or manage conditions outside my professional scope;
- create conflict between the patient and her treating doctor.
The primary reproductive treatment remains under the responsibility of the patient’s fertility doctor/ specialist, while my role is supportive and complementary by acupuncture.
Scientific Evidence Overview
The scientific literature on acupuncture in reproductive medicine has evolved significantly over the past two decades. While earlier studies produced mixed conclusions, a growing body of research suggests that acupuncture may offer meaningful supportive benefits when used alongside assisted reproductive technologies.
Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have indicated that acupuncture performed around the time of embryo transfer may be associated with improved clinical pregnancy rates in certain patient populations. Although results are not entirely consistent across all studies, some analyses have shown statistically significant improvements, particularly when acupuncture protocols are standardized and appropriately timed.
Beyond implantation outcomes, there is stronger and more consistent evidence supporting acupuncture’s role in modulating physiological and psychological factors relevant to fertility. Research has demonstrated that acupuncture may influence uterine blood flow, regulate the hypothalamic–pituitary–ovarian axis, and support hormonal balance. These mechanisms are considered beneficial in optimizing the endometrial environment and overall reproductive function.
In addition, acupuncture has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and cortisol levels—factors known to negatively impact fertility outcomes. Studies using validated psychological scales have reported improvements in emotional well-being and quality of life among patients undergoing IVF who receive acupuncture. Improved sleep quality and autonomic nervous system regulation have also been observed, which may contribute to better treatment tolerance and physiological readiness.
Importantly, acupuncture is generally considered safe when performed by trained professionals. This safety profile makes it a suitable complementary option for patients seeking additional support during fertility treatment.
While it is essential to acknowledge that acupuncture is not a standalone solution and does not guarantee pregnancy, the current evidence supports its role as a valuable adjunctive therapy. When integrated into a comprehensive treatment plan, acupuncture may enhance patient well-being and may contribute to improved reproductive outcomes.
Collaboration With Treating Physicians
I am always happy to work in a respectful and transparent way with fertility specialists, gynaecologists, endocrinologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in the patient’s care. When appropriate, and with the patient’s consent, I can provide:
- a short summary of the patient’s integrative treatment plan;
- information about the timing and frequency of acupuncture sessions;
- clarification about the supportive goals of treatment;
- updates if any issue arises that may require medical attention.
My aim is to make the patient feel more supported, without interfering with the medical treatment plan established by her primary physician/ specialist.
